What is high risk pregnancy ?

Most of the time having baby is a natural process. But some women can have difficulties with their health or health of the baby. A high-risk pregnancy is one in which the mother or baby is at a higher risk of problems during pregnancy or labour than a normal pregnancy.

What are the factors that make a pregnancy high risk?

Women having chronic health problems like blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, heart problems, etc can become pregnant and they need specialized care. Some conditions can arise in pregnancy like pregnancy-induced hypertension, Diabetes in pregnancy, low lying placenta, growth problems in the baby,  etc....Women conceived with IVF, multiple pregnancies also need special care.

Can high-risk pregnancy be prevented?

Not completely preventable. It can be prevented to a certain extent by having a healthy lifestyle before and during pregnancy. It is recommended that women who are planning a pregnancy, visit a doctor to make sure they are in good health and plan pregnancy under ideal conditions.

How is high-risk pregnancy treated?

Women with a high-risk pregnancy should receive care from a specialized team of health care providers and hospital which caters to emergency services. They need multidisciplinary care to ensure the best possible outcome.  Not all high-risk pregnancies will have problems. With good care before and during pregnancy, most of them will have a good outcome.
